love, peace, and harmony, oh very nice very nice, but maybe in the next world

We had a great time last night playing the Gross Domestic Product festival. Saw a lot of great bands, met a lot of great people. Thanks to all the people who came out!

Before our set I noticed we had some old mailing list signup sheets left lying around in our merch cases that I’d yet to add people from. We’re so organized. So welcome new folks, hope it didn’t take us too long to get back to you.

Best new discoveries of the night for us personally were probably Druids — it was cool to see some heavy stuff at this event, I’d been looking forward to checking them out after having listened to a bit of them on their MySpace, but live they were a whole other intense experience — and Canby, a new project by Envy Corps drummer Scott Yoshimura. It took me a while to connect where I’d seen him before, but later on I caught a bit of him talking with Dan about what an interesting experience it had been for him as a drummer switching gears into guitar and songwriting. It made sense, because I thought his songs and guitar playing had some really interesting rhythmic things going on in them. Christopher The Conquered rocked out, as expected. In fact there were a heck of a lot of good acts in the show, I had a difficult time keeping track of them all.

At the end of our set I tried to plug our upcoming gig at Vaudeville Mews this Thursday (April 1) but Dan got it confused with another show that got cancelled or changed somehow and said we weren’t playing it. So just to clarify, we are playing at the Mews on Thursday, 10pm, with a really cool band fro Lincoln Pharmacy Spirits, and Gabe Cordova who you may remember from our CD release show. And we’re working like mad booking more shows and working on our next couple albums – we’ll be in Iowa City on April 9 and 10 recording. See you soon.

Had a rad time at the M-Shop Sunday night. Big thanks to all of you that came out. One thing about the M-Shop, they run that place straight pro. They have you show up like 4 hours before the show and do a nice, meticulous, full-set-up soundcheck. And it shows. They treat musicians real nice too.

Bowerbirds sounded great. I remember finding it interesting that they play in Iowa so much. Then I thought the singer/guitarist looked familiar, but then I thought, bah, lots of skinny bearded plaid-wearing thirtysomethings who play in indie folk bands kinda look similar. Then to my surprise after their set he came up to me and said he thought he knew me from somewhere. Turns out he’s from Grinnell and I guess hung out at UNI some, played in a band called The Speed Of Sauce who I remember seeing and playing some shows with and have frequently wondered what happened to, and certain of our mutual friends are the ones through whom my wife and I got together. Or at least, it was at a party at their place that we started dating. It’s always cool when you discover a connection like that with people you meet and play with at gigs, makes you wish you could hang around and chat longer.

Anyway we’ve got a really exciting Des Moines gig coming up, and that’s the 5th annual Gross Domestic Product festival put on by the Des Moines Music Coalition. If I have to tell you one more time how much you need to be there…

and a kick drum for a heart

Word on the street is that Ely Falls is done for. That’s sad news, we really liked them a lot. We’re still not sure who’s going to take their spot on this Sunday night’s show at Vaudeville Mews with us and this sweet Omaha band Fortnight, but you all should come. We’ve got an old classic song we’re planning on doing that you haven’t heard in a Why Make Clocks show in a while, if ever.

We’re definitely re-establishing our presence locally this month after playing it cool through this awful winter we’ve had. Look for us in Ames next week, at the Ames Progressive Office with Light Pollution Wednesday the 10th, and at the Maintenance Shop on Sunday the 14th with a delightful folky outfit that’s doing great stuff these days, Bowerbirds.

As if getting on stage at the M-Shop again weren’t exciting enough (it’s been awhile for Why make Clocks, and it’ll be the first time for me), we’re on the lineup for this year’s Gross Domestic Product festival, taking place on the 27th at All Play downtown. Two stages showcasing an awesome variety of Des Moines area bands. Personally, I’m especially looking forward to Hanwell, Druids, The Seed Of Something, Christopher The Conquered, and Superchief. I’m told that Blutiger Fluss will be taking over Ely Falls’ spot. The rest I’m not too familiar with yet so I’m expecting some pleasant new discoveries, but that list right there should give you an idea of the variety in this show: indie pop, riff-rock, sludge/doom, ambient electronics, and lots more. Incidentally, today is the birthday of both Jeff from Blutiger Fluss and Jasper from The Seed Of Something, so if you see either of them wish them a happy.

And just added, we’ll be at Vaudeville Mews again on April 1 with Gabe Cordova and another great band from just to the west of us, Pharmacy Spirits from Lincoln, NE, on the second date of an epic tour.

We’re hitting the studio early next month, ostensibly to work on our next album, or possibly on some EP or something. Anyway, we’re recording soon. It’s a bit daunting for an old lo-fi home-recorder type like me to be going into an actual studio, but I couldn’t have asked for a better band to be doing it with, and I’ve heard nothing but wonderful things about the studio we’re going to.

Speaking of albums, It’s True, a really neat band from Omaha that we’ve played with a couple times, have one coming out soon (their first full-length, in fact), and I’m excited to hear it. They’re heading out to SXSW, as is Light Pollution, so wish them well.

Also speaking of albums, you should think about getting yourself a copy of These Things Are Ours if you haven’t already. You can order one right here. Or just come out to one of our shows I just told you about.

Thanks! See you Sunday!

Hi folks. Still ironing out the kinks on the mailing list, I think some folks got emails about me adding new venues to the show calendar. Sorry about that. Also the emails have this cheezy theme. It’s all getting worked out, though.

Some really great shows coming up! We’ll be opening up for Bowerbirds at the M-Shop (in Ames) Sunday March 14. It seems like Bowerbirds have been kind of a thing lately, and I’ve certainly been enjoying everything I’ve been hearing from them. Check out this video they just came out with like yesterday over at Stereogum and this Daytrotter session from a few months back. Good stuff. So this is a pretty exciting gig for us, really looking forward to it.

Despite its proximity on the calendar to the above, we couldn’t pass up the chance to come back to the Ames Progressive Office the preceding Wednesday, March 10, for the almighty psychedelic sounds of Light Pollution as they make their way to SXSW.

But before any of that, we’ve got an all-ages Sunday evening show, March 7 at 5 pm at Vaudeville Mews with Ely Falls and Fortnight. I have a feeling this will be a very cozy down-home show for us like similar Mews gigs we’ve had recently, and that’s a really cool vibe that I recommend coming out and getting into.

Also I’m told we’re going to be on Gross Domestic Product this year. Stay tuned for details.

And finally, I sent in our submission for this year’s 80/35 festival a few days ago. It would be beyond awesome if we got to play that, so if you don’t mind, do us a favor and head over to the 80/35 Facebook page and put in a good word for us!

Oh, come to think of it, one more thing: Get down to the Mews for the 5:30 all-ages early show this Friday! You probably don’t need me to convince you to see Squidboy or The Poison Control Center, institutions of central Iowa rock and roll awesomeness that they are, but I’m recommending you get down there early for this pretty stellar young up-and-coming outfit called The Seed Of Something. We don’t just say such nice things because we know the kids either, we’re honestly pretty impressed with how they’ve started out. Ask anyone who caught their first show last month.

A week ago tonight we played at the Mews. It was cool as always to see North Of Grand again and we brought back the old classic “Eyelets In The Rabbits’-Feet” just for Ketelsen.

Story Of The Sea is a delightful new discovery for us. They were simply great. Came down from Minneapolis and I hope we see them again. I had a minor panic when I opened the bass guitar case I had brought back behind the stage and leaned up against my cabinet only to find it was not my bass at all. I worried it had gotten mixed up with some bro-core band from the early show. But turns out it was the guy from SOTS’s back-up and mine was quickly located nearby. Said guy from SOTS seemed really fascinated with my P-bass, and surprised at my answer when he asked me what year it is (’66), which got him talking about basses in general. It’s a nice bass (both of his looked nice too); I bought it from Kevin Jass of The Mittens a few years ago and consider it one of my all-time lucky scores. But I’m not much for gear talk.

I put a mailing list signup thing over on your left there. I think a lot of bands really under-use their email list because they think they have to reserve it for the Big Official-like Announcements. They should probably just be more friendly about it and just write to people to say hi. Anyway, we hardly ever write to ours either, but maybe if we got some more sign-ups that would change. In fact, you should go over there and sign up right now.

We’re planning to work on songs for the next couple albums, play more shows, and all that kind of stuff bands do. We’ll be back at the Mews on March 7 for an early show with Ely Falls and Fortnight.

our ship explodes, our work is done, we’ve left our lives inside the sun

Last month Dan had this fun idea for each of us to do our own “Top 10 albums of 2009″ list. Everybody does it. Laying aside for the moment the possibly fading relevancy of the album as a format; I’m not totally buying into it yet, and anyway we like albums. Well, we’ve been stalling on posting them because Will hasn’t got his in. Three weeks into the new year I think it’s time to let him off the hook.

Dan’s (in order):

  1. Weinland “Breaks In The Sun”
  2. The Black Heart Procession “Six”
  3. Morrissey “Years Of Refusal”
  4. Polvo “In Prism”
  5. Sonic Youth “the Eternal”
  6. Dinosaur Jr. “Farm”
  7. Do Make Say Think “Other Truths”
  8. Jason Lytle “Yours Truly, the Commuter”
  9. Katatonia “Night Is The New Day”
  10. Isis “Wavering Radiant”

Chuck’s (in no order):

  • Sonic Youth “The Eternal”
  • Dinosaur Jr “Farm”
  • Kowloon Walled City “Gambling On The Richter Scale”
  • Black Pyramid “Black Pyramid”
  • Magnolia Electric Co. “Josephine”
  • Morissey “Years Of Refusal”
  • Zoroaster “Voice Of Saturn”
  • The Disciplines “Smoking Kills”
  • Boston Spaceships “The Planets Are Blasted”
  • Mastodon “Crack The Skye”

Honorable mentions:

  • Neko Case “Middle Cyclone”
  • Wilco “The Album”
  • Pelican “What We All Come To Need”
  • Built To Spill “There Is No Enemy”
  • Baroness “The Blue Album”
  • Om “God Is Good”
  • The Sundance Kids “The Excellent Sundance Kids”

Making a list like this is kind of funny because there are so many releases you’re aware of but never really got around to getting or listening to very much that you suspect might make the list, but it feels wrong to put on albums that you suspect you might like a lot, but don’t really know very well. I really don’t know how music critics do it, because they also have to think of a bunch of interesting stuff to say about each album. Even with the amount of music that Dan and I are able to listen to (we both tend to have jobs where we can pretty much listen to music all day while we work) it’s hard to get to everything that strikes you as interesting. Especially when you suffer lengthy bouts of unemployment that hamper your ability to buy tunes.

Hopefully you are working your way out of hibernation from this weather. We’ve got a hell of a show coming up on January 29 at Vaudeville Mews with North Of Grand and a really cool Minneapolis band called Story Of The Sea. Hope to see you.

Why Make Clocks is back at it. Saturday we went up to Omaha to play at O’Leaver’s. Bazooka Shootout sounded great, we went on second, then Nick from Little Black Stereo pulled double duty after that, playing piano in the Matt Cox Band before Little Black Stereo capped off the night. One thing is for sure, Nick can play the fuck out of a piano. It was a great show. The band selection was appreciably eclectic and all of them good, and a good turnout and fun all around.

Ian (of Thunder Power) offered us his place to crash at, but we experienced car trouble on the way to his place from O’Leavers. The “brake” warning light was on and the steering was really stiff and something smelled funny. So we didn’t know if we were going to end up stranded or what. In the morning Ian recommended the garage at the BP shop a few blocks away which besides having been good to him in the past had the distinction of being open on a Sunday. Turned out the idler pulley had gone out resulting in loss of the serpentine belt. On the drive back to Ian’s, he and Dan had the fortune of finding the belt itself in the street, and took it back over to the garage. So for not much more than a hundred bucks we were back in business and headed home by noon. Huge thanks are due to Ian and that garage. You guys are lifesavers.

Weekend after next we’ll be on the hometown scene with a show at the Mews on the 29th with North Of Grand and Story Of The Sea. Also plan on us at The Maintenance Shop in Ames with Bowerbirds in March.

Good times. Busy times. For me, anyway. We had a really cool show at Vaudeville Mews on Sunday. It had been a while since we’d done an early/all-ages show, and the sets ran a bit long so by the time we went on we were past curfew. There didn’t seem to be anybody underage in the place anyway. Apart from us, it was kind of the quintessential Ely Falls bill — all of the other three bands had big lush walls of sky-sound from guitar effects and an abundance of auxiliary instruments. Up to and including use of two xylophones simultaneously, by the opener, who was not Druids, but rather Wind & Sail. Some of the nicest bunch of musicians I think I’ve ever been on a bill with, camaraderie and positive vibes in abundance. I wish I’d gotten around to posing this earlier just in case anybody from around Springfield, MO is reading, as they just played there the other night. Flashbulb Fires have a bunch of shows coming up however, touring for the release of their new album Glory, which I got at the show but haven’t got around to listening to yet. Definitely will tomorrow at work.

We’re coming back to Omaha on January 9, a Saturday, to play at O’Leavers with, among others, a favorite of ours, Little Black Stereo.

I’ve been meaning to bring this up on here for several days now but things have been busy.

It’s easy to get a little blase about the local bands you’ve known and loved for years, no matter how great they are. You hear about a local gig they’re playing and you think, meh, no big deal, I’ve seen them lots of times, it’s always pretty much the same show, and I’ll probably get another chance to see them before long. You let yourself get kinda complacent. It’s totally understandable. I used to be that way about House Of Large Sizes years back when I lived up around Cedar Falls.

But we here at Why Make Clocks want to encourage you to not listen to the part of your brain that talks that kind of nonsense. We want you guys coming out to our shows because we have more fun with you there. So here’s the thing: We’re working on tons of songs for the next few albums, EPs, singles, or whatever we end up doing. We’d like to keep our hometown crowd in the loop about what we’re working on. We’re going to make a point of working new stuff into our local shows. If you come see us in Des Moines you will have a very good chance of hearing at least one Why Make Clocks song you have never heard before. We hope that will pique your curiosity enough to give you just enough of a push to brave the weather and come out to see us.

Specifically, tomorrow night (Sunday December 13) at the Vaudeville Mews, where we’ll be unveiling “Christmas Is Ruined” (which previous lineups have actually performed in the past, but not often) and quite possibly also “Palace Of Ash.” These are a couple really great new songs. Yeah we know a lot of you will be suffering rock hangover from the Cursive show tonight, but enough with the excuses. It’s a nice early show (starts at 6pm). Ely Falls, always a treat, will also be playing, as well as Flashbulb Fires and Wind And Sail. We hope to see you.
