my tongue is tied, i’m sleeping nights awake

I’ve attempted to add a merch store to the site. The checkout is through PayPal, so I think you might need to have a PayPal account to buy stuff. Everybody has PayPal though, right? I’ve had it for years, it’s pretty easy to sign up on. People use it on eBay all the time. Well, if you have any trouble with it, email me right away at chuck, at-sign, nothinghappens, dot, net and we’ll get it all squared away for you. One item we’d especially like to highlight is the These Things Are Ours CD release party poster, a beautiful piece of silk-screen art commemorating the awesomeness that was the Friday before last. If you were there and had as much of a blast as we did, you want this puppy on your wall to remember it by. There’s only a few left, so jump on that shit.

There’s also a button on the sidebar to buy These Things Are Ours through Sleep On The Floor Records. If you buy it off the “merch” page you get it from us dudes in the band, but it amounts to about the same thing either way. Except that if you get it through us you can buy some of the other stuff (7″, shirt, poster) at the same time. Also we might throw in a button, whereas Sleep On The Floor might throw in a download card. Or if you’re the cool futuristic type and just want the download, you can head over to sleeponthefloor.com and do it that way.

Anyway, please buy stuff from us, because we’re all broke and shit. And also because the stuff we’re selling is super good and you love us.

CD Release Party #2 went pretty decent. Attendance was nothing like what we had at the first one at the Mews, but it’s hard to imagine how it could have been, as that show was truly amazing. We had a wonderful time all the same. Thanks go out to the JG Faux Show having us on to plug our stuff, and for being really entertaining besides; to The Half Hearts for getting the rock started; and double thanks go to American Restless for the time they spent and shows they did with us. We intend to do some more fun things with them in the future.

North Vs South was a little different than I expected, but not by much. A dozen or so bands per day alternating between two stages in a beautifully crusty rock club (scaled down from multiple venues in previous years). If it’s actually meant as a contest between North and South, I think we might have to call it a draw. We met some definite characters too. North Of Grand played great, and I heard the Hickoids were hilarious offensive fun but was a bit tired and preoccupied sitting at the other room’s bar while they played. The big discovery for me personally was Grand Champeen, and the crowd in the room during their set was commensurate with their rock skills in size and enthusiasm. I wonder how it could be that I hadn’t heard of them before.

We had what I’d consider our first on-the-road “misadventure” since I joined Why Make Clocks on the way back. After nearly colliding with a stretch Hummer limo on our way out of town as it look up four lanes to turn out in front of us, we stopped at a Quik Trip for some food, and as we pulled in Dan asks me if we need to get some gas. See, the gas gauge on the van is broken. He’d put in $40 worth before we left Des Moines and I told him I thought we had enough to get back on. I grab some munchies and we take off. Some ways up the road, the combination of skanky roller grill food on top of a few beers and being half-asleep in the front seat with oncoming headlights swimming before my eyes got to me and I had to ask Dan to pull over so I could throw up on the side of the interstate. With that accomplished, we resume our drive and I drift off to sleep, when suddenly I realize the van is sputtering to a stop on the side of the interstate. It appeared we’d run out of gas after all. Dan calls roadside assistance and after an hour and change, during which I’m pretty sure we all caught a nap, they show up with $5 worth. We get off at the next exit, with only 30 miles to go until Des Moines, to put in some more. Once at Dan and Kim’s we decide to forgo the unloading of gear and just all get some sleep. I finally hit my bed about quarter to six.

So lesson learned: always fill up before leaving town. That was originally my plan once the gauge broke, and I didn’t stick to it, and this is what happens. Also, I really need to save up that money to get it fixed. Right after fixing the exhaust that’s been not-quite-all-there for a long time now, and got shook a little more loose still when I ran over a dead animal on the way back from Omaha last week. Oh and then there’s the window that doesn’t roll down… maybe we should have a “Fix The Van” benefit show :P

Coming up next month we’ve got a couple shows here in Des Moines as well as Lawrence, KS and Springfield, MO. We’re hoping to find something in Columbia, MO to go in-between those two on the 25th.

i’m drifting further from my boat…

Had a real cool time at The 49′r in Omaha last night. Thanks to the 49′r for being a cool bar and to Black Heart Booking for getting us hooked up on this.

American Restless, who are hanging out with us here in Des Moines for a few days, also had a show last night in Omaha but at a different venue, the Saddle Creek Bar. We’d have preferred to do a show together, but this was just how the booking ended up working out. So we headed off to Omaha, with Kim along to hang out and help with the merch, which she is exceedingly good at — I wish we could bring her along all the time.

Late-entry Spiders For Love opened things up at the 49′r. I’m a sucker for this kind of fun lo-fi bedroom-folk stuff in a live setting like this. If it’s got acoustic guitars, Casio keyboards, cuss words, and girls singing vocal harmonies, well, that’s a formula for smiles. “Don’t Ever Kiss Madonna” was especially entertaining. I hope we can hang with them again sometime. Platte River Rain folked it up in a bit more country-fied traditional style with songs about fuckin’ up. Good stuff.

One of Dan’s amps (he plays through two) didn’t want to fire up so he had to play through just the Blues Junior, which sounded a little off but was plenty loud enough. We made do. After our set, which seemed to go over quite well, The Biatomic Point coughed up a big messy glob of “balls-out rock and roll.” They seemed to have a good little following that includes a lot of goth kids, which is kind of weird because in my impression they weren’t gothy by any stretch, but hey, whatever bites your neck.

After much friendly chat with the Spiders For Love folks, and giving some of our CDs to Daniel to sell at Homer’s Music in Omaha, we made the drive back to Des Moines and that’s pretty much that.

Our second CD release party for These Things Are Ours, which is at the Des Moines Social Club, is all-ages, and starts with our being a guest on the JG Faux Show at 8:30 and will also feature American Restless and The Half Hearts, is this Wednesday night, and then Saturday night we’ll be trekking down to Kansas City for North vs. South Fest at Davey’s Uptown. We’ve got some more great shows lined up for next month that I haven’t entered on the calendar here quite yet, so check back sometime soon.

I really want to show you that funny photo we found lying in the parking lot behind Barley Street Tavern last time we were in Omaha. I’ve got it sitting right here. But I have no batteries for my camera, and my scanner is kind of busted. I haven’t seen the Cadillac emblem that was attached to it since we got back from Lincoln… maybe Will ended up making that belt buckle after all.

reaching for the sky, tearing up the ground

Oh man. It just hit me that I stood up on stage last night next to Eric Kennedy of the legendary Squidboy, as well as former member of and occasional collaborator with Why Make Clocks, and played four songs with him.

Last night was my proudest moment yet as a musician, and if my intuitions are anything to go on, the start of many great things to some. I’m talking of course about the These Things Are Ours CD release party at Vaudeville Mews. We wanted to really make it a great event, and with help from a lot of wonderful people — Kim, Austin, Cassie, Eric Kennedy, The Mews itself, Ely Falls, Gabe Cordova, American Restless, Erich Ernst, Sparga Design, Anthony Pontius, plus a little publicity from Juice and Cityview and a nod from Des Noise, we pulled off a night of 110% awesome. I don’t believe I’ve ever played to such a wonderful crowd. You guys are the best fans and friends a band could ask for.

By the way, if you liked the song of Austin’s we covered in the middle of our set, he has download albums available from our label Sleep On The Floor under the name Austin May (and here’s a website). It was cool having Austin play some keyboards with us last night too. Austin and Cassie run the label and deserve massive thanks for all their hard work.

Let’s hope we can keep this run of good going. Tonight we’ll be playing at The 49′r in Omaha with Platte River Rain and The Biatomic Point. Next Wednesday we’re doing another CD-release-party type deal at Des Moines Social Club, except this one’s all-ages, and I think it starts a little bit earlier for those of you who have trouble staying out so late (we understand how it is). We wanted to give as many people as possible the chance to celebrate this with us. American Restless will be tearing it up again there, and we’ll also have The Half Hearts. And Saturday the 22nd we’re playing North vs. South Fest at Davey’s Uptown in Kansas City.

“These Things Are Ours” CD release party tonight!

why_make_clocks-these_things_are_ours

This is it folks, the official release day of These Things Are Ours. Join us tonight at Vaudeville Mews for the release party show — not only is the admission free (kudos to the Mews for letting themselves be talked into that), but we’ve got musical surprises in store for you during our set, stuff that you might never see/hear again; we’ve got all the fly Why Make Clocks merchandise — CDs, t-shirts, buttons, super coolass posters — with some really sweet package deals tonight only; and there will be cookies! We’ve also got a fine opening lineup to get things rolling: Gabe Cordova, Ely Falls, and American Restless will all be gracing us with their sounds. Music should get started around 10ish, but feel free to get out there a little ahead of time so you don’t miss anything.

Last night we made our way to The Mill in Iowa City for the first of a few shows we’ve got lined up with longtime Why Make Clocks friends American Restless. Nothing too out of the ordinary went down, just an overall good time. Iowa City is a damn fine town, The Mill is a damn fine venue, and as I came to find out, American Restless is a damn fine band. Also Samuel Locke-Ward was there running sound, and besides being a damn fine booking guy, musician and songwriter, he’s one of my all-time favorite people. It was great to get to see him again. Thanks to two fine local Iowa City bands, Final Alibi and Maylane, for letting us borrow some of their crowd for a little while.

Early last week we headed up to Ames Progressive for a show that seemingly no one knew about. Sorry if we didn’t get the word out to you. We probably should have sent posters. But we did get to meet Sundance Kids from Olympia, WA, sort of friends-of-friends of mine, and despite the small crowd they put on one of the more entertaining sets I’ve seen a band perform in quite some time. I think they might still be on tour. I’d recommend seeing them if you get the chance

See you tonight!

Kim (my wife) & I went to see The Whigs and Band of Skulls @ the Waiting Room in Omaha last night (which was awesome, though sparsely attended).  Afterwards, we went for a post-show beer @ the Barley Street Tavern where Midwest Dilemma and Issac of Longshadowmen (from Ames) were playing a show that turned out to be more of hootenanny of sorts with different songwriters (myself included) in the crowd getting up and playing songs together Kyle Harvey (of It’s True) was there serving the drinks, Sarah Benck was there and played a few songs and another fine gentlemen (unaffiliated with a band) got up and played 4 songs that were pretty damn good. I closed the night with a version of “Tight Dissolve” that included Nick of Midwest Dilemma on electric guitar, Nick and Liz from Little Black Stereo on tamborine (Nick) and vocals (Liz)-Liz plays w/both Little Black Stereo and Midwest Dilemma I thought it went pretty damn well considering none of them had ever heard the song before. It was a great time. Omaha has a lot of really good bands & singer/songwriters (beyond the well-documented circle of quality bands on Saddle Creek) that people should hear such as Little Black Stereo, It’s True, Brad Hoshaw, Midwest Dilemma, Kyle Harvey (solo), Thunder Power, Spiders for Love, Platte River Rain, and plenty of others.
